How To Break In Your Baseball / Softball Glove (without ruining it)

Let me tell you about Danny G.—HS freshman shortstop from Jersey City with a cannon for an arm and zero patience. He shows up to my travel tryouts with a brand new glove he "broke in" by microwaving it in a wet towel. That thing looked like a burnt quesadilla and closed about as well as a claw machine.
I’ve seen worse. One kid oiled his glove with motor oil. Another thought sleeping on his glove would "build chemistry." Then there was the genius who steamed his glove over a boiling pot of ramen—like he was preparing it for dinner instead of double plays.
And yes—brace yourself—some players have actually peed in their gloves. Supposedly to soften the leather. All it really does is make your glove smell like a truck stop bathroom and ensures nobody will ever steal it. Ever.
Creative? Maybe. Effective? Absolutely not.
I’ve seen it all. What you need is a smart break-in strategy—here we go...
🧤 Why Breaking In Your Glove Matters
A glove isn’t ready to play just because you can wear it. Breaking in your glove properly:
-
Loosens the padding and leather without weakening it
-
Forms a reliable, consistent pocket
-
Reduces the chances of clanks, bobbles, and dropped outs
-
Sets the stage for custom shaping after the glove is playable
The goal? A glove that moves like your hand, secures the ball, and performs like it was made just for you.
🔧 How the Webgem Kit Helps You Break In Your Glove the Right Way
Every Webgem Kit is packed with tools that speed up the break-in process without damaging your glove. There is a specific Webgem Kit for every position on the diamond, period:
🧤 Patented Glove Form
This is the heart of the system. Slip the form into your glove when you're not playing, and it helps create the ideal pocket depth and glove shape without overstretching or flattening the glove.
🎒 Neobreathe™ Compression Case
This breathable neoprene sleeve locks the form in place, gently compresses the glove to break it in evenly, and protects it from moisture (sweat, rain, Gatorade spills—you name it). Bonus: it doubles as a cleat shield in your gear bag.
📦 Removable Handle Wrap
Wrap your glove handle during storage and travel to maintain your preferred wrist shape. It’s also ready for name/number embroidery, so you can rep your team in style.
💧 Glove Glaze Conditioner
Softens leather just enough to help it take shape—but doesn’t overdo it like heavy oils or old-school hacks. Keeps leather healthy, pliable, and ready for reps.
🧼 Microfiber Towel
Use it to clean your glove before conditioning or just wipe off field grime. You’ll be glad it’s in the kit.
🔁 The Coach Dan Glove Break-In Method (a.k.a. The Right Way)
-
Twist the Heel – Using both hands, flex the thumb and pinky toward each other to loosen the padding.
-
Apply Glove Glaze – Apply Glove Glaze lightly all over the glove to start. Hit the hinge points with more Glove Glaze to really loosen them up.
- Insert Webgem Form & Compression Case – If it’s a brand new glove, let it sit for 72 hours. Give the leather time to start molding to the form. If it’s a glove that’s already seen some action, 24–48 hours will usually do the trick. Just don’t rush it.
-
Play Catch. Repeat. – There’s no substitute. Ball meets leather. That’s how the pocket is born.
-
Store it Smart – Keep your glove in the Webgem case whenever you're not using it in practice or a game. It’s the fastest way to maintain shape and break in the glove. Period.
